Since 1981, the Solano County Office of Education has sponsored the Academic Decathlon, a competitive event, modeled after the Olympics, designed to stimulate academic achievement and honor "athletes of the mind". The competition provides students the opportunity to participate in an educational forum, which fosters a deep respect for knowledge, cooperation, and self-esteem.

Like the decathlon of the ancient Greeks, the Academic Decathlon consists of ten exacting and exciting events. But, while the Greek events were contests of physical strength, the Solano County event is a contest of academic strength. The Academic Decathlon includes tests in art, music, language and literature, mathematics, economics, social science or science, and the Super Quiz (a team event, 60% written and 40% oral held before an audience). In addition, there are communications tests that include the writing of an essay, the delivery of a prepared and an impromptu speech, and an interview.

In 2006, the Solano County joined with Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma and Yolo Counties to form the North Bay Region Academic Decathlon.
